Our story

In the early 70s, our dad John Reaves was known for his legendary, hickory-smoked hams and turkeys. His food was so loved, people started asking if they could buy his barbecue. He soon realized he was happiest in front of a smoker providing great food for loved ones. So in 1976, he turned his passion into a career and opened his first restaurant. Alongside "Smokey" John, our mom Gloria ("Mama Reaves") and cousin Douglas "Rent" Spraglin played a huge role in building the restaurant's legacy. Mama Reaves was a whiz with customers, bookkeeping, and décor while Rent was the ultimate pitmaster. He could grab meat straight off the pit with his bare hands! Although our founders are no longer with us, their impact is felt in everything we do. Smokey John's has always been family-owned and -operated, and we're intentional about extending that family spirit to our customers. It's what's made us a favorite spot for friends, families, and co-workers to gather and take a break from their day for over forty years.

How smokey's got its name

One afternoon, Big John's was filled with smoke from a pit fire. A regular walked in and declared, "Y'all should really call this place Smokey John's!" From that day on, Dad did!

Meet The Team

Brent Reaves

President

"When I was a kid, I loved being around people and food while spending time at the restaurant with my dad. That love continues today as I manage the daily business operations for Smokey John's. I graduated from the University of North Texas (UNT) with a Bachelor of Arts in Hotel and Restaurant Management in 1999 and immediately joined the family business. With over 20 years of experience in the food service industry, I'm now focused on expanding our brand to create opportunities for my family, for people looking to develop their skills, and for those who simply need a second chance."

"I first worked in our family's restaurant the summer before fourth grade. Since then, I've been in and around the food service industry for most of my life. After graduating from Southwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in Business and Communication in 1993, I pursued a career in sports marketing and media. Eventually, I decided to return to Smokey John's and join my brother in taking our family business to the next level. For over ten years now, I've used my experience and skills to help build our brand into a thriving restaurant and a successful catering and concessions company."

"I was a fan of Smokey John's first, then I became family. Now in my current role, I get to give back to this place that has given me so much. I graduated from Southern Methodist University (SMU) with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing in 2003 and explored several careers before joining the family business in 2018. I enjoy using my background in marketing, education, training, and communications to lead initiatives that challenge norms, prompt change, and enhance our culture. I balance developing a strong infrastructure with fostering a supportive environment where our team members feel seen and valued."
